Over 20 Georgia families who have lost loved ones to police violence are partnering with Atlanta artists to raise awareness, challenge false narratives, and re-humanize their stories, aiming to galvanize public support for anti-police brutality efforts.
Memorializing with Purpose
Phase 1: The Aster Mural
2024-2025
Over the next 12 months, this collaboration—comprising the families, a dedicated research team, and a group of artists and organizers—will bring these stories to light through a 1,000-square-foot mural in downtown Atlanta. The project will serve as a powerful focal point for community engagement, featuring outreach events and opportunities for public involvement in the mural's creation, establishing a dynamic space for this vital conversation.
Aster Mural
Atlanta-based portrait artist and muralist, Maisie Thompson, will paint over 20 portraits in the coming months, each one memorializing a life honored in the Aster Project. These portraits will be mounted on a larger 1,000 sq. ft. mural, created by a team of Atlanta artists with active involvement from the families and the community, at a central location near government buildings in downtown Atlanta.
This mural will serve as a powerful physical space for reflection, a springboard for action, and a hub for ongoing community engagement and dialogue.
Aster Album
We will be partnering with the family members of the Aster Project to produce a tribute album that brings together renowned musical artists, community youth, and emerging local talent.
Through the power of music, we will continue to tell the stories of these individuals killed by police, fostering empathy and creating a compelling vehicle for truth.
Aster Documentary
Film is a powerful vehicle for social change. We will be documenting the evolution of the Aster Project and telling the true and complete stories of each life lost through the eyes of their families, amplifying the voices of those who knew and loved them.
Aster Stories
Critically acclaimed, bestselling, prolific, and award- winning writers bring the humanity and truth of victims of police brutality to this short story collection filled with authentic, and heartwarming stories that showcase who the victims and their loved ones left behind really are.
They will also collaborate with the researcher, journalist, and the families of the Aster Project to publish the true stories of each individual on our website as each portrait is completed.
